Overall landscape:
Salesforce.com has few distinct product areas

    • Sales cloud
    • Service cloud
    • Custom cloud (force.com platform)
  • Marketing cloud
  • Analytics cloud

Configuring Sales and Service cloud areas do not require much development skills unless you are extending the functionality, which in turn requires platform knowledge.

Basics:

Functional knowledge:
If you are interested in understanding basic concepts like lead, opportunity, account, forecasting etc. you can read Salesforce.com for dummies book (see files section below)
(please note that this book may be outdated as compared to Salesforce.com Sales Cloud version currently in production – remember the functionality is updated every 4 months however you can learn some basic concepts which do not change with every release).

Technical knowledge:

Salesforce.com is based on simple concept of objects, you can think of Object as a table in database. The advantage of creating an Object in Salesforce.com is 1. You get User Interface (web page) to enter the data, to create, read, edit and delete the records 2. Reporting is built-in, you can build report on the data 3. Write workflows and/or code to do different actions (triggers) when data is created or modified or deleted.
alright… best thing to do …sometimes is, to just jump in the water , go ahead and sign up for a developer org, it’s absolutely free at https://developer.salesforce.com/signup

Certification path:

The path to certification for a certified consultant is explained here : https://trailhead.salesforce.com/en/credentials/administratoroverview/

Various career paths are available, Salesforce.com renames the certifications once in a while so best to read various options at above link.

there is a study guide on the website for each of the career tracks. you can start reading more about everything online.

Get to work:

for applying for job at salesforce.com partners , goto: http://sites.force.com/appexchange/results?type=Services
and sort by “certification” to sort by size of the organization. Use LinkedIn to see who is working there and apply through them.
you can also apply at CloudGofer by going to Current openings page.
Good Luck !!
